Congestion persists in Manila ports.

July 21, 2014

Manila BulletinManila Forwarder The congestion of shipping containers has prompted the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to extend its operating hours at the Port of Manila (POM) and Manila International Container Port (MICP).

Customs Commissioner John Phillip Sevilla has issued a directive authorizing BOC personnel to render overtime services in an apparent effort to decongest the Manila ports.

“The BOC is open for operations on Saturdays and Sundays at the POM and MICP starting on June 28, 2014 and every succeeding weekend until further notice,” a notice sent to media said.

At the same time it said, “BOC will also extend operations at ports and sub-ports handling shipments of locators of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.”

Aside from POM and MICP, other ports and sub-ports extending working hours are Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and the economic zones of Cavite, Laguna and Calabarzon area.

The Manila ports have been overcrowded for some time now resulting from the sharp increase in the volume of shipments.

Several importers and customs brokers also blamed the delay in the release of goods contributing to the congestion due to the tight rules in securing accreditation and tax certificate at BOC and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), respectively.
